¡¡¡¡Perhaps for the purpose of this conference
I could reflect on how my own country of residence, a small
island kingdom, with an inclement climate has been responsible
for the training of the world’s most influential Creative Designers
who can be found driving most of the world’s leading Design
Brands. The export of U.K. creative designers is what we appear
to be able to deliver best. While it might be acknowledged
by historians e.g the milliner, Rose Bertin , dressmaker to
the French Queen Marie Antoinette, be considered as the first
couturier, it was the Englishman Charles Frederick Worth who
in the 19th Century trail blazed the role of haute couturier
within the city of Paris , in a manner we now recognise as
a designer.
While many other nations developed luxury Fashion industries
to be envied, it has only been to date the United Kingdom
who have developed such an in depth and highly skilled specialist
study within their Higher Education system for Fashion Design.
Fashion was first placed, very uneasily within the British
Art School curriculum in 1932, it took nearly 35 years before
it became recognised by our industry as the preferred route
of entry into the industry for a designer. It was not until
the mid 1980’s that the menswear industry would readily admit
designers in preference to tailors ( very skilled technicians
or craftsmen). Now Menswear is questionably more innovative
than Womenswear a reflection of a period when women have a
choice of partner and man is returning to his original ‘Peacock
status.
